Small Scale Real Crude laboratory

SINTEF believes it is necessary to shed more light on multiphase chemistry. Fields on the Norwegian Continetal Shelf and elsewhere are facing tailend production with increasing water-cuts. To simulate the interaction between fluid phases a deeper understanding of the chemistry of events is required. The use of actual hydrocarbons breaks an important barrier enabling studies of complex chemistry-dependent phenomena. Live crude for example, changes its properties under varying pressure and temperature conditions and with aging. SINTEF’s Small Scale Real Crude laboratory also allows work on high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) fluids – again reflecting one of the important trends in current production developments. The test loop consists of a 50m long 1in pipe which can be pressurized up to 100bar, and temperature-controlled from -10ºC to +50ºC. In addition, high-pressure wheel-shaped flow loops are available with pipe diameters from 2-5in, temperature control from -10°C to +80°C and max pressure 1000 bar.
